Midterm- Parametric Design

PROJECT BUILDING

The National Art Center (Tokyo, Japan)

The National Art Center, Tokyo (NACT) is the national government's fifth art institution to be organized under the umbrella of the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art. The NACT is one of the largest museum in Japan and has 14000 square meters of exhibitions space. The museum is characterized by a long facade covered with large glass curtain wall with exterior glass louvers to block direct light and ultraviolet rays.

PROJECT CHALLENGE

Sun Tracking Glass Louvers Acting as Solar Shading

The goal of this project is to create glass louver system which can be controlled to reduce the solar loads without compromising daylight supply.

MODELING

Curved facade wall

Curved facade wall is based on plan drawings since the wall includes many different curves and complicated.

Each line is created with Point Element tool and Spline Through Point tool. With theses reference lines, conceptual mass model can be created by using Create Solid Form tool.

Conceptual mass

Glass louver family

This family is created based on Curtain Panel Pattern Based family.
In curved facade, each panel has one glass louver. Angle (instance) parameter is created to be controlled individually along sun path.

Angle Parameter=80°

Angle Parameter=10°

All Parameters

Integrated Glass Louvers

After dividing surface of conceptual mass, glass louver family is loaded into mass.
Angle parameter of glass louver is instance parameter so all angle cannot be changed at the same time.
Louver angle =10°

Louver angle =45°

Louver angle =60°

Louver angle =80°
